Masterplan render at night-time, emphasising the "re-enlightenment" concept
The proposed Portsmouth Open College is a school dedicated to tutoring new construction skills, guiding individuals who find their existing speciality to be no longer sought after in the modern age. To suit the largest proportion of needs, the opening times are near 24 hours a day, with workshops, libraries, classrooms and lecture halls in constant operation. The design mimics this 'openness' through the constant telling of light, its bright landscaping signifies a new 'Enlightenment', the birth of new skills and a new age for many people.
The form of the scheme embeds itself into the urban landscape, aiming to keep a 360 degree access available, whereby the appearance from the aerial view details no reduction in publicly accessible landscape. The building is then dug into and somewhat hidden, operating somewhat only by the large circular tower that houses the Library. This is a prime example of the different approach to private and public space, with public operating at the north of the site and private, which is more enclosed and instead has access to light through skylights, is positioned in the south. Other facilities, such as pavilions, onsite parking for those who are outside of Portsmouth's island border and proximity to the Royal Navy persist as advantages for all visitors, student or not.
